Western Australia tops 50,000 subsidized home batteries as rooftop solar sets record

That amount of new capacity is enough to supply electricity to 25,000 homes.

More than 50,000 subsidized home batteries are now installed in Western Australia, marking a major clean energy benchmark for the state, according to PV Magazine Australia.

That growth gives households more ways to save rooftop solar for later, and it comes as solar uptake in WA continues to climb.

Here's what to know

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program has helped drive more than 50,000 battery installations in Western Australia, representing more than 1.1 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity, PV Magazine Australia reported.

April through June brought a record-setting burst of rooftop solar in WA. More than 110 megawatts was installed during the second quarter of 2026. That amount of new capacity is enough to supply electricity to 25,000 homes.

Rapidly expanding outer suburbs in Perth, Australia, are seeing the most battery interest. Residents are looking for ways to use more of the solar power they generate and cut back on expensive grid electricity.

Battery storage can help protect a home during outages, lower energy costs, and support efforts to go off-grid. By storing cheaper daytime solar power for use at night, batteries can also provide backup electricity when the grid is under pressure, or blackouts strike.

If you're curious about your own options, it may be worth exploring EnergySage's free tools to get information about home battery storage options. EnergySage has also teamed up with the electrification brand Qmerit to guarantee you get the best price on home battery systems. Pila also offers excellent battery backup choices that cost less than a whole-home system.

Batteries are increasingly helping meet peak demand, reducing reliance on more expensive power generation and easing pressure on electricity prices.

Save $10,000 on solar panels without even sharing your phone number

Want to go solar but not sure who to trust? EnergySage has your back with free and transparent quotes from fully vetted providers in your area.

To get started, just answer a few questions about your home — no phone number required. Within a day or two, EnergySage will email you the best options for your needs, and their expert advisers can help you compare quotes and pick a winner.

Solar panels can save you more than $50k over their 25-year lifespan, and EnergySage can help you save as much as $10k on installation. Which begs the question — isn't that worth an email or two?

As PV Magazine relayed, Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said, "Australia is a solar nation, and these latest figures show that we're rapidly becoming a home battery nation too."

Bowen added, "Every battery helps cut power bills, reduces pressure on the grid during peak periods, and helps put downward pressure on wholesale electricity prices for all consumers, while helping build a stronger and more reliable electricity system."

Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy Josh Wilson said growing suburban areas stand out in this shift. Families there are turning to batteries as a practical way to lower bills and make better use of rooftop solar.

"At a time when cost-of-living pressures remain front of mind, batteries are helping households keep more of the free energy they generate and reduce their reliance on expensive power from the grid," Wilson said, as PV Magazine relayed.

What's being done?

Support from both the federal and state governments is helping drive WA's battery gains.

WA's Residential Battery Scheme and the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program are working together to help households store more of the energy produced by their rooftop solar systems and use it when they need it.

The government is also investing beyond individual homes. In WA, five community batteries from the Community Batteries for Household Solar program now provide 2.8 megawatt-hours of storage. Another 18 batteries totaling 14.8 megawatt-hours are also due to come online.

Meanwhile, 10 new projects in regional WA are expected to add 1.9 gigawatts of renewable generation and 482 megawatts of battery storage through the Australian government's Capacity Investment Scheme.

That kind of large-scale buildout can improve reliability for entire communities while helping homes and businesses access cheaper, cleaner electricity.

As PV Magazine stated, WA Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation Amber-Jade Sanderson said, "This is what building a State of Energy looks like: lower bills, cleaner energy and a stronger grid for everyone."
