Homeowner hopes for warranty cash-out after coil leak knocks out older AC unit, sends house to 85 degrees

"That can definitely be fixed. I've repaired many leaks like that one."

When an aging air conditioner gives out in the middle of a heat wave, homeowners are often left with two frustrating choices: pay for a repair that may not last or start preparing for a full replacement.

On Reddit, one homeowner said an older Trane unit had stopped working and left a roughly 1,500-square-foot home at 85 degrees while the owner waited to see what a warranty company would cover.

The homeowner said a technician friend believed "one of the coils under the fan is bent and leaking some coolant, rub leak," and added, "I'm hoping they cash the system out."

Here's what to know

Much of the conversation focused on whether the system needed replacement or could still be fixed. The homeowner said a home warranty company was expected to inspect the unit and worried it would "try to bandaid like they do everything."

Replies split between doubts about the warranty company and confidence that the leak itself could be repaired.

One user said, "That can definitely be fixed. I've repaired many leaks like that one."

Another warned, "Home warranty is crap when it comes to appliances like this. Don't expect it to go how you want."

A repair may be possible from a technical standpoint, but that does not always make it the best choice for a homeowner's comfort or finances, especially if the system is older, relies on outdated refrigerant, or is already showing signs of decline.

More background

Older air-conditioning systems can quickly turn into money pits even when they are still technically repairable. A leak can be sealed, refrigerant can be replaced, and the unit may run again, but homeowners can still be left with high utility bills, uneven cooling, and the possibility of another breakdown not far behind.

Upgrading your heating and cooling system can be one of the most effective ways to lower utility bills and guard against rising energy costs. When equipment is outdated, each additional repair can become harder to justify.

Refrigerant also became part of the discussion.

After one user asked, "What type of refrigerant does it use?" the thread pointed to a common issue with aging systems: some use refrigerants that can be harder or more expensive to service, making replacement the more practical path.

What can be done?

The first step is getting a clear assessment of whether a repair would amount to a short-term patch or a worthwhile investment. It may help to compare the cost of fixing the unit with the savings and reliability of a newer high-efficiency system or heat pump.

Palmetto can be part of that comparison process, too. If you're not ready to spend up front, the Comfort Plan includes no-money-down options.

You can also drive utility costs even lower by pairing solar panels with electric appliances, such as efficient HVAC systems. EnergySage makes it easy to find a solar array and installer for your home and budget.
