A home gardener is making the case that a less tidy-looking garden can offer more than curb appeal.

On TikTok, the creator, reshgala__, said that combining vegetables, herbs, and flowers in the same raised bed can bring in pollinators and other helpful insects, improve yields, and make it possible to rely less on pesticides.

What happened?

Rather than organizing a home bed into neat rows, the gardener highlighted a "polyculture" setup in the TikTok post, with different types of plants growing together in one space.

@reshgala__ Beauty in diversity. 💖 Mixing in a wide variety of veggies, herbs and flowers together has not only made my garden incredibly beautiful, but also increased my harvests by attracting pollinators and beneficial insects alike. This year alone, I've discovered ladybugs, lacewings and monarch butterflies in my garden. 🦋🌸🐝 And it happens when you reduce the application of pesticides and follow simple companion planting principles. Planting in rows are meant for large scale gardeners and farmers for achieving economies of scale. For most home gardeners, aesthetics can be as important as food production and that's when mixing in plants together in one raised bed works wonders. Hope you're gardening the polyculture way too! The creator said, "Mixing in a wide variety of veggies, herbs and flowers together has not only made my garden incredibly beautiful, but also increased my harvests by attracting pollinators and beneficial insects alike."

The gardener connected those results to "simple companion planting principles" and lower pesticide use.

They added, "This year alone, I've discovered ladybugs, lacewings and monarch butterflies in my garden."

Why does it matter?

A productive backyard or patio bed can help families save money on produce, especially as the cost of fresh herbs, greens, tomatoes, and peppers can quickly add up at the grocery store.

Produce picked just minutes before dinner often tastes better than store-bought options that may have traveled long distances. Growing food at home can also make it easier to avoid unnecessary chemical inputs when gardeners choose low-spray or no-spray methods, as this gardener has done.

A garden that attracts butterflies, bees, and beneficial insects can also support local biodiversity.

What can I do?

A simple way to begin is to plan around plant combinations instead of sticking to strict rows.

Placing flowers and herbs among vegetable plants can fill out a bed while potentially drawing pollinators and other beneficial insects.

Home gardeners often use companion planting to get more from limited space while supporting better growing conditions. In raised beds, that can be especially useful because every square foot matters.

As the TikTok video shows, adding flowering plants alongside edible crops can also make a food garden feel more decorative and inviting.

Users in the comments were quite impressed with the garden.

One user said, "This is absolutely stunning! Hopefully next year this will be my reality."

Another commented, "The joys of companion planting."
