Los Angeles homeowner skips $700 repair, replaces 27-year-old HVAC and furnace for just under $13,000

"If the install is cleanly done that's a good deal, I'd even say a great deal for California."

When a decades-old air conditioner suddenly freezes over, homeowners are often left with a difficult choice: pay for a repair that may not last, or replace the system and face a much larger bill.

That was the situation one Los Angeles homeowner described after replacing a 27-year-old HVAC system and furnace for $12,422.

Here's what to know

According to a post on r/hvacadvice on Reddit, the owner's "27 year old 4 ton system" had been running well until the "air temp coming out of the registers was equal to the outdoor temp" and the "outdoor unit iced up like hell." After looking at it, a technician reportedly said a refrigerant recharge would cost about $600 to $700, while also cautioning that the unit's age made that fix a questionable investment.

With the furnace also being similarly old, the homeowner decided against a short-term repair and moved ahead with new equipment. The choice, they said, was a "4 ton enhanced efficiency option at $12,422."

This provides a useful benchmark from an expensive metro area like Los Angeles. Replacing a full HVAC system is costly, but newer equipment can also cut down on future service calls and use less energy month to month.

More background

Once HVAC equipment moves well beyond its expected lifespan, even relatively modest repairs can be hard to justify.

Older heating and cooling systems also tend to cost more to operate, especially during periods of extreme heat or cold, leaving homeowners more exposed to rising energy prices.

Save $10,000 on solar panels without even sharing your phone number

Want to go solar but not sure who to trust? EnergySage has your back with free and transparent quotes from fully vetted providers in your area.

To get started, just answer a few questions about your home — no phone number required. Within a day or two, EnergySage will email you the best options for your needs, and their expert advisers can help you compare quotes and pick a winner.

Solar panels can save you more than $50k over their 25-year lifespan, and EnergySage can help you save as much as $10k on installation. Which begs the question — isn't that worth an email or two?

A frozen outdoor unit can point to low refrigerant, airflow restrictions, or other mechanical issues. While a recharge may provide temporary relief, a decades-old system may simply be nearing an unavoidable replacement.

What can be done?

Getting multiple quotes and asking each contractor to price out repair, standard replacement, and higher-efficiency replacement options can give homeowners a clearer sense of what they would spend now versus what they might save over time.

Palmetto is also worth considering if the upfront cost feels out of reach. Through Palmetto's Comfort Plan, if you're not ready to spend up front, the plan includes options that can lower your heating and cooling costs.

You can drive those costs even lower by pairing solar panels with electric appliances, like efficient HVACs. EnergySage makes it easy to find the best solar system and installer for your home and budget, saving you up to $10,000 on installations.

Some Redditors were surprised to see the quote.

One user said, "If the install is cleanly done that's a good deal, I'd even say a great deal for California."

Another commented, "Those are prices I expect to see in the rural midwest. Definitely not in California and certainly not posted here on Reddit."
