In Nebraska, UV-glowing soybeans could tip off farmers to disease before leaves show it

The system is designed to flag infection sooner, potentially giving farmers more time to make decisions and reducing guesswork.

In Nebraska, genetically modified soybean plants in trial plots may glow under UV light before they even begin to look unhealthy.

Researchers say that kind of early warning could help farmers respond to disease in a timely fashion that could make a meaningful difference, as Brownfield reported.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln plant pathologist Dylan Mangel is building forecasting tools alongside UV-based detection methods meant to spot soybean infections before symptoms can be seen on the leaves, the outlet said.

In years when soybeans face greater disease risk, that kind of lead time could let growers act earlier. Fungicides do not provide season-long control, so applying them within the right window can be the difference between useful protection and a missed opportunity, Brownfield noted.

Mangel pointed to white mold as one example.

"White mold, for example, if we could narrow that down to when is it going to happen, then it would help time those fungicides better because they're not effective the whole season," he explained to the outlet. "You have to put them on and hope to time that right for that window."

At trial sites around Nebraska, Brownfield reported his team is also working with CropVoice to figure out how soon diseases can be identified after they first take hold.

Brownfield described the work as still early in development. A tool that helps farmers see disease pressure coming, or detect infection before symptoms appear, could improve confidence and reduce some of the uncertainty that comes with managing crops.

What's being done?

The research is split between seasonal forecasting and plot-level detection. Mangel is exploring ways to estimate which years could bring stronger disease pressure while also testing UV-camera systems in plots of specially engineered soybeans, the outlet said.

Once infection occurs, those trial plants glow under UV light, giving researchers an earlier read on disease development than ordinary visual scouting would provide, per Brownfield. That could help farmers react faster and with more precision.

The nuances of the glow on the leaves also offer insights.

"We can also see the distribution of that infection on the leaves, which then helps us tell what disease is at that point," Mangel told Brownfield. "Then they have UV cameras in those fields that are watching and monitoring that continuously and reporting back."

The work remains experimental, but the outlet reported that Mangel is hopeful the approach can scale to large farming operations.
