Costco takes Florida distribution center off grid with solar, batteries, and EV charging

At Costco's distribution center in Port St. Lucie, Florida, Trinity Energy has installed an on-site clean energy system that brings together solar power, battery storage, and electric vehicle charging.

As FacilitiesNet described, that setup can let the facility keep running apart from the grid when necessary.

Here's what to know

Trinity Energy announced in a press release that it had deployed the integrated energy platform at the Costco distribution center.

The company said the installation bundles on-site solar generation, battery storage, and EV fleet charging into a single system. It was completed faster than a conventional backup-power project connected through local utilities.

The platform is built to support round-the-clock reliability for data centers and other technology that is highly sensitive to outages. It is also intended to serve the rest of the site, supplying systems including lighting, refrigeration, and HVAC.

For Costco, that could mean lower energy costs, less exposure to rising utility rates, and access to tax credits tied to solar and energy storage. If a major facility produces more of its own electricity, it can also ease pressure on the grid during periods of high demand.

"By investing in this integrated on-site energy system, we strengthen the reliability of our Port St. Lucie facility while avoiding additional burden on the utility grid," declared Shay Reed, AGMM, CEM at Costco Wholesale, in the release.

The project reflects a growing challenge for businesses across the country as reliable power is becoming harder to take for granted.

Extreme weather, rising electricity demand, and grid bottlenecks are making energy resilience a bigger priority for large operations like warehouses and manufacturers.

Many businesses are choosing on-site energy systems for the added control instead of waiting through the interconnection queues and permitting delays that often come with conventional utility-backed options. Trinity said in the release that its platform also gathers usage data that can help facilities spot waste and tune operations for more savings.

Distribution centers depend on steady electricity to keep logistics moving and avoid costly interruptions. When those systems go down, consumers can feel the effects.

But now that this system is in place, Ime Ntekpere, energy buyer at Costco Wholesale, is seeing a huge bright side.

"The project will inspire greater commitment and support from communities around the country to ease grid capacity through meaningful behind the meter clean energy development efforts like this one," Ntekpere suggested.

What's being done?

As the press release noted, Trinity is positioning the Port St. Lucie installation as a model for other energy-intensive facilities.

When a facility can produce and manage more of its own power on-site, it is better positioned to keep operating during periods of stress on the grid. That kind of shift could help businesses stabilize expenses while reducing peak demand on local utilities.

The Costco project shows how clean energy can be a sustainable and practical business tool, helping keep essential services running while reducing dependence on increasingly strained infrastructure.
