A Reddit post documents a tense moment between a spectacled cobra and a cat moving through a tight alley in Kerala, India.

In the video, both animals were aware of the situation and were poised for attack. Sharing such a tight space didn't make the matter any better.

What happened?

In a Reddit post on r/whatsthissnake, a spectacled cobra is in the middle of an alley in a striking position, while a cat is circling it.

The cat moved around the snake in an extremely cautious manner, head down, ready to pounce. In the end, both animals showed each other respect, and the encounter ended with no injuries.

The animal was observed from a safe distance while capturing the tense interaction.

Spectacled cobras, also known as Indian cobras, are venomous snakes native to the Indian subcontinent. Cats are also known to confront and even kill snakes, so both creatures felt the gravity of the situation, and it was visually apparent in the video.

Why does it matter?

Although this video was about a cat and a snake, it's worth noting the proximity of the cameraperson. People and wild animals are increasingly sharing the same spaces. This interaction occurred in an alleyway that seems to get a good amount of foot traffic.

When overlap happens in densely populated areas, a snake sighting can quickly become a public safety issue for households, workers, and bystanders.

Human activity can be part of the reason. Expanding development, habitat fragmentation, waste that attracts prey species, and changes in land use can all increase the chances of encounters between people and animals that would otherwise avoid one another, as discussed by this BBC Future article.

What can I do?

If you encounter a snake, the most important step is to keep your distance. Do not try to move it, capture it, or get closer for a better photo. With venomous species, a few extra feet can make a major difference.

People who live in areas where snakes are common can also reduce risk around their homes by keeping yards and storage areas clear of debris, watching where they step at night, and using lights outdoors. Shoes and gloves can add protection during gardening or cleanup.

If a snake is in or near a living space, contacting local wildlife rescue workers, animal-control teams, or forest officials is typically safer than attempting a DIY removal.

One commenter added another word of warning: "Be careful when cats are near snakes, they might throw the snake around."

In the end, this potentially dangerous situation ended calmly, as the original poster wrote: "Don't worry guys, everyone in this video is safe. The snake was legit scared and got away into the nearby fields after some time."
