A brief but disruptive power outage left more than 1,800 Pacific Gas and Electric Co. customers in the dark across San Francisco's Russian Hill, North Beach, and Chinatown neighborhoods.
What happened?
On social media, the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management called the incident "large" and "unplanned." The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the outage began around 7:45 p.m. Sunday. At about 8 p.m., traffic signals at one intersection were dark.
A PG&E spokesperson told the newspaper that service was restored just prior to 9 p.m.
Why does it matter?
When the power goes out, whether with or without warning, residents can lose access to elevators, refrigeration, air conditioning and heating, internet service, and medical devices, while businesses can lose sales and inventory can spoil.
Dark traffic lights make intersections dangerous for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders.
Utility customers pay monthly bills with the expectation that core infrastructure will work, especially in major urban neighborhoods. When it does not, the burden falls on everyday people, who absorb the risk, delays, and costs tied to the disruption.

PG&E restored service, and the traffic signal problem reported by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency was fixed.
In apartment-heavy, high-traffic neighborhoods, outages can affect transit and emergency services, requiring quick coordination from city agencies and utilities.
The Department of Emergency Management's post stated that customers could visit PG&E's Outage Center or call 1-800-743-5002 for real-time outage maps, updates, and estimated restoration times. PG&E also sends outage alerts to those who sign up for them.
