A content creator turned a water-damaged $1 Goodwill coffee table into a sleek, matte-black piece, showing how a low-cost thrift find can be rescued from the waste stream and given a shockingly stylish second life.

What happened?

In a TikTok video, content creator Logan (@loganlists) documented the transformation of a worn Goodwill coffee table into a sleek, matte-black piece.

"I got $1," the creator opened. "We're at goodwill. Let's see if we can turn into 300."

While browsing Goodwill, the creator passed over items that were too expensive for what he dubbed the $1 Thrift Challenge.

He ended up landing on a coffee table priced at exactly $1. Once the table was home, the creator made it his mission to "save this thing from the landfill."

Keeping the original tile intact, Logan prepped the damaged piece by protecting those sections, sanding away water spots and loose material, wiping off the dust, and cleaning the surface with denatured alcohol before applying an all-in-one "anchor black" paint.

After seeing what the tile looked like in its worn state, he opted to paint it as well. He admitted some skepticism throughout the process but continued to go with his gut.

Once the makeover was complete, the table looked dramatically different, prompting the creator to remark, "This looks like a designer piece."

Commenters were largely impressed with the result.

"Actually looks waaaaay better than I expected!" one exclaimed.

Another declared: "Tbh… that looks GOOD!!! For $1 and some paint??? Can't beat that!"

Why does it matter?

Furniture flips like this show how thrifting can save money while cutting down on waste. Instead of buying a brand-new table, the creator spent just $1 on the base piece and put in a bit of effort to give it a second life.

Home goods, clothing, and decor often cost significantly more at traditional retailers. Thrift stores also offer the chance to find unusual, high-quality, or even valuable items at steep discounts — something big-box shopping rarely provides.

Discarded items can still have plenty of life left in them.

What can I do?

Thrifting is one of the simplest ways to save money and reduce waste at the same time. It can help to start with pieces that have a solid structure, even if the finish looks rough.

Scratches, fading, and outdated colors can often be improved with sanding, cleaning, paint, or new hardware.

Flexibility also goes a long way. In this case, the creator passed on several items before finding the right one within budget, which is often part of the process. Shopping with measurements, a spending limit, and some patience can make secondhand hunting much more successful.

"At my good will thats $250," a commenter offered.
