Investigators say a home in Rocky Point, New York, in which a child was living, contained an estimated 500 to 1,000 rats, with many of the animals determined to be sick or severely injured.
The woman who lived there was arrested, and rescuers say the sheer number of surviving rats has made the effort to get them out safely a difficult, large-scale operation, WNYW reported.
What happened?
A Long Island woman is facing animal cruelty, neglect, and child endangerment charges after authorities alleged that hundreds of rats in her home were not properly cared for.
Strong Island Animal Rescue said the house held roughly 500 to 1,000 rats and that many were suffering from cancerous tumors, serious injuries, respiratory problems, and mite infestations.
WNYW reported that the rescue effort has been especially challenging because the nonprofit does not have a physical shelter.
Volunteers have removed several dozen rats, including four in critical condition, and are providing food and water while organizing a larger-scale removal plan.
