When summer temperatures spike, an underperforming air conditioner can create very expensive problems.

According to CBS News, however, a Georgia HVAC professional says one of the basic and least expensive steps homeowners can take is simply keeping its filter clean.

Before calling for repairs, Tony Hashani, owner of Climate Heroes Air Conditioning, said homeowners can start with a few straightforward checks.

He noted that people may be able to inspect certain parts themselves first like the drain line, drain pan, and filter.

"The No. 1 thing I recommend for homeowners is going to be check your filter," Hashani said.
"Just make sure that the filter is clean… This is going to solve about 50% of your issues."

Hashani also urged homeowners to pay attention to warning signs that could signal a bigger problem.

One example is a thermostat that suddenly goes blank.

"Most likely you're going to have a clogged drain that's backing up, and the system is turning off the safety switch," he said to CBS News.

The outside unit can create trouble as well. Pollen and other debris may accumulate on the outdoor condenser coils, causing the system to work harder than necessary.

That extra strain can increase the odds of a breakdown, waste energy, and drive up monthly electric bills.

Hashani said some homeowners may be able to handle that maintenance themselves.

"Take a garden hose and just wash through the coil slowly," he said to CBS. "Make sure you're getting anything that may be stuck inside. Wash that out once a month, and that way you won't need a chemical cleaning as often."
