A four-month-old goose in Texas became an unexpected hero after sounding the alarm on a barn fire before the situation could turn catastrophic.

His loud, unusual honks woke the Gerber family in time to stop the blaze and make sure every animal inside was safe.

Here's what to know

In Fort Bend County, the Gerber family's barn caught fire while owner Bert Gerber was asleep on the couch. Goosey was the first to react, honking in a way the family had never heard from him before.

As the New York Post reported, citing KHOU 11, surveillance footage showed Goosey standing near the backyard barn as the flames burned behind him.

It quickly became clear to Bert Gerber that the noise was an alarm.

"I just casually came outside, and I saw a fire billowing out of there," Bert recalled. "I grabbed a water hose and ran over there."

Gerber was able to extinguish the fire before it spread further, and KHOU 11 reported that all of the animals in the barn were later accounted for safely.

Why does it matter?

Goosey has been with the Gerber family since Mother's Day and generally keeps to himself. Because of that, his sudden burst of honking immediately stood out.

Bert's wife, Chelsea Gerber, had not originally wanted a goose, but their daughter, Elaine Gerber, bonded with Goosey at a "hug a goose" event.

"When we got him, he was so small, and he was just so fluffy. When I got to pet his head, he would just rest his head on my arm, and it just made me tear up," she said.

What can be done?

For families who keep animals in barns, coops, or other outbuildings, fire prevention matters just as much outside the main house. Smoke or heat alarms designed for utility buildings, routinely checked wiring, and easy access to hoses or fire extinguishers can all make a difference.

It also helps to have evacuation plans in mind for animals, especially when they are housed overnight. Even a few minutes can matter when flames begin spreading through a barn or shed.

Abrupt, out-of-character behavior in pets and farm animals can be a sign that something is wrong.

Readers inspired by Goosey's heroics can also support animals closer to home by taking local action in your community to help animals and neighbors.

For the Gerbers, Goosey is no longer just the family's newest addition — he is their lifesaver.

"If I hadn't been woken up, I think in a couple more minutes, it would have been … out of control," Bert said.
