Lake County deputies removed 85 small-breed dogs from a Groveland property where authorities said the animals were surrounded by waste and in need of prompt medical attention, creating an immediate challenge for a shelter already near capacity.

Fox 35 Orlando reported that the animals had been kept in filthy conditions. Officials said the smell from the Sharon Road home could be noticed from the street, and deputies also found 11 horses at the property.
Lake County Animal Shelter director Whitney Boylston said the animals did not all arrive with the same level of health concerns.
"Everything from appearing perfectly healthy to being underweight, maybe having some dermatitis, things like that," Boylston said.
Before the dogs were brought in, the shelter was already caring for about 150 animals. Fox 35 Orlando reported that officials called it the shelter's largest dog impoundment on record.
The dogs are not available for adoption while officials determine their health status and immediate needs.

Officials have not said whether the horses were removed or shared any update on their condition, according to the report. The Lake County Sheriff's Office said the investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed while authorities await veterinary assessments.

In response to the influx, the Lake County Animal Shelter set up a temporary off-site area to intake and examine the dogs, Fox 35 Orlando reported.

As Boylston put it, "To suddenly have 85 additional dogs show up on our doorstep, that is an enormous strain."
