A long-running online rumor collapses several stories into one: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's sparse housing setup in Texas, Boxabl's prefab business, and a made-up home offer.
Blending those threads helped the claim spread widely, even though the core housing pitch does not survive fact-checking, Intelligent Living reported.
Here's what to know
Near SpaceX's Starbase site in Boca Chica, Texas, stands a small, modest home that Musk has long claimed is his main residence.
Since June 2021, the Tesla and SpaceX chief has described it that way publicly, including in an X post.
"My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX. It's kinda awesome though," Musk tweeted.
But the truth is murky.

As Intelligent Living noted, a Boxabl unit appears to be located near Starbase, and Gulf News reported in June that Musk mainly lives in an approximately 400-square-foot tiny home there.
But Boxabl has never identified Musk as a customer, and reports suggest the structure may instead serve as a guesthouse or auxiliary building.
A larger claim is false. Tesla does not sell a $7,999 tiny house that includes free land and no property taxes. The company has never offered such a product, announced a housing division, or promoted the deal that keeps circulating on social media.
Videos spreading that story reportedly drew over 120 million views in eight months.
Much of the misunderstanding appears tied to Tesla's 2017 demo house in Australia, which was built to showcase solar panels and Powerwall batteries, not to launch a homebuilding business.

Boxabl is a real company.
Its Casita is a foldable prefabricated home measuring about 20 feet by 20 feet, with a kitchen, bathroom, washer, dryer, and other built-in amenities.
However, the frequently repeated $50,000 figure covers only the base unit and does not include land, delivery, permitting, utility hookups, or installation.
Boxabl was listed on Nasdaq on July 17 under the ticker $BXBL.
By Aug. 21, the company said it had delivered 335 units across 10 states, posted $2.1 million of revenue in the first half of 2026, and logged a $13.6 million net loss.
Even when celebrity claims turn out to be false, prefab housing can still offer meaningful advantages.
Small, efficient homes can cut energy use and reduce monthly costs.
What can be done?
Check the claim before buying anything, particularly when it comes to large purchases such as cars or housing, even the "tiny" sort.
If a listing advertises a luxury-branded home at a price that seems implausibly low, review the company's website and public filings before clicking links, sharing personal information, or sending money.
Anyone considering prefab housing should budget for the entire project instead of focusing on the advertised shell. Site preparation, foundation work, permits, transportation, utility hookups, and insurance can make an apparently cheap home far more expensive.
If you're not ready to downsize or go all in on tiny living, you can still leverage some of those benefits by modernizing your home.
Whatever Musk's living arrangement is in Boca Chica, it does not make the Tesla house rumor real.
