One gardening bargain can grow into months of homegrown food, flowers, and a little community goodwill.
A Dollar Tree shopper has gone viral after turning a routine trip into a gardening windfall, scoring nearly 1,000 seed packets for just a penny each.
What happened?
Posting on Reddit, the shopper said the haul included 701 flower seed packets and 256 packets of vegetables and herbs for under $10, which would have totaled $478.50 at full price.

According to the post, the seeds had already been taken off the sales floor after being reduced to a penny. When a manager overheard the shopper talking about the markdown, she went into the back and brought out more inventory, including an unopened flower-seed display.
"She apologized that there were no [more] vegetable seeds like she hadn't just handed me an entire flower farm," the original poster joked.
The shopper then came back with produce that was ripe in their garden for the manager. By the time they returned, the manager had also found the vegetable seed packs and packed them into gift bags.
One commenter noted, "If it's possible, you should check with your local library. Our local library has a seed library, where people can basically 'check out' seeds to grow in their own garden for free."
Seed libraries can be especially helpful for beginners who want to try different plants without buying full packets.
Why does it matter?
Seed packets, especially when they're on sale like this, can be one of the most affordable ways to create value at home. A small packet of tomato, basil, or jalapeño seeds can become fresh ingredients that often taste better than store-bought produce and keep producing through much of the growing season.
Growing even a portion of your own food can also reduce packaging waste and limit the transportation needed to move produce from farms to stores.
The story also highlighted gardening's ability to build community. A helpful manager turned a clearance find into an exchange of seeds and homegrown vegetables.
