Consumer technology prices are steadily rising due to the growing demand for artificial intelligence.
Now, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos predicts that subscription-based cloud services will soon replace the traditional personal computers we all rely on in daily life.
As Tom's Guide reported, Bezos explained in a New York Times interview how the era of everyone having their own PC is coming to an end.
"This is what computation is like today; everyone has their own data center," Bezos said. "That's not going to last. It makes no sense. You're going to buy compute off the grid."
This statement resonates with the fact that an increasing number of online services already rely on Amazon Web Services, a secure cloud platform, to operate. Cloud-based gaming services have become more popular in recent years, and AI demand is pushing the limits of current PC technology.
Bezos' comments raise questions about whether PC technology will soon become too expensive, forcing people to choose subscription-based cloud computing to meet their AI needs.
More broadly, rising technology costs and the overuse of AI are concerning because they impact both our wallets and the environment.
With more AI technology comes a greater demand for energy-intensive data centers that consume large amounts of energy, strain natural resources, and increase utility bills for residents. Data centers still often rely on traditional, unsustainable fuel sources, thereby contributing to pollution and the steady overheating of our planet.
Rapid AI expansion also has social and economic impacts, including job displacement and data privacy issues. This technology's benefits are often not evenly distributed in modern society, and low-income communities tend to be most negatively affected.
If you are concerned about these critical climate issues, make a point to be mindful of your AI use and encourage others to do the same. It's worth learning about both the pros and cons of growing data centers so that you can participate in meaningful community discussions where you live and advocate for sustainable social and environmental policies.

"All of this going on is making me not want to use modern technology anymore," one Tom's Guide reader commented on Bezos' AI statement. "It's not progressing, it's regressing into its own thing and the user, you and I, no longer have any control."
"They can pry my solar panels, batteries, PCs, and GPUs from my cold, dead fingers," someone else wrote.
