Homeowner discovers simple fix after whole-home battery system goes dark during storm

A homeowner counting on a whole-home battery backup system ahead of a storm got an unsettling surprise: When they flipped the main breaker to simulate a utility outage, the house went dark anyway.

That kind of failure runs counter to the very reason many people invest in batteries in the first place — to keep the lights on when the grid doesn't.

Here's what to know

The homeowner said on Reddit that they have an Enphase setup with 30 kilowatt-hours of 10C battery storage and full-house backup. They said they tried multiple operating modes, but the result did not change.

The OP said, "Flip the main power off again, and the house goes dark..."

Adding battery storage is one of the best ways to protect your home during outages, save on energy costs, and go off-grid. It can also help households use more of their own stored electricity instead of buying as much power from the utility during expensive periods.

If you're considering storage, exploring EnergySage can help you get information about home battery storage options, including competitive installation estimates. EnergySage has teamed up with the electrification brand Qmerit to guarantee you get the best price on home battery storage solutions. Another company, Pila, also offers excellent battery backup options, and its plug-and-play batteries are priced at a fraction of the cost of a whole-home backup system.

The homeowner shared two updates.

First, they said, "Seems like turning off 'power match' has solved it for now till I can do more testing."

Save $10,000 on solar panels without even sharing your phone number

Want to go solar but not sure who to trust? EnergySage has your back with free and transparent quotes from fully vetted providers in your area.

To get started, just answer a few questions about your home — no phone number required. Within a day or two, EnergySage will email you the best options for your needs, and their expert advisers can help you compare quotes and pick a winner.

Solar panels can save you more than $50k over their 25-year lifespan, and EnergySage can help you save as much as $10k on installation. Which begs the question — isn't that worth an email or two?

In a follow-up, they said the installer worked with tech support, which found the system was far behind on updates and "forced an update."

More background

Others in the thread said they had seen backup-related glitches too, including on systems that had worked normally through outages.

One Redditor said, "We had a similar problem, and it turned out that the connections to the backup panel were out of phase."

Battery storage is often marketed as both a resilience tool and a money-saving upgrade. A well-functioning system can help reduce grid purchases, support self-consumption of solar power, and provide peace of mind during storms or unreliable utility service.

But when the transition to backup fails, homeowners may still face spoiled food, lost work time, overheated or unheated homes, and costly disruption.

Even high-end electrification upgrades need proper installation, software updates, and occasional testing to perform as promised.

What can be done?

Testing backup before bad weather arrives can reveal issues while there is still time to address them. In this case, the homeowner discovered the problem only after deliberately switching off the main breaker.

One user said, "If your house demand is higher than the battery inverters can produce, you will get an outage."

The OP replied, "I think the house was using about 2KW at the time. I dont think that's it."
