Electric cars are now cheaper than hybrids worldwide, and China helped make it happen

The global crossover suggests EVs are no longer just a premium option for higher-end buyers.

Electric vehicles appear to have reached a notable turning point in the global car market as the average EV now comes with a lower purchase price than the average hybrid.

As creator The Electric Viking (@electricviking) breaks down, that shift challenges the familiar view of hybrids as the cheaper transitional choice for drivers moving away from gasoline vehicles.

Here's what to know

A Nikkei Asia analysis found that the global average sticker price for an EV was about $37,000 after dropping roughly 9% since 2020, while the average hybrid rose 16% to about $39,000, per the creator.

Looking at sales-weighted global sticker prices before subsidies, the study found EVs held an average price advantage of about $2,000 over hybrids.

"The average EV was cheaper than the average hybrid," The Electric Viking confirms.

Even so, that average does not automatically translate to every market. Nikkei Asia said the U.S. still stands apart, with hybrids selling better than EVs and often ending up cheaper upfront once incentives are included.

The global crossover suggests EVs are no longer just a premium option for higher-end buyers. If average prices keep falling, more drivers may be able to consider an EV not only as an environmental decision but as a financial one as well.

"Pure EVs have thousands fewer parts so that tracks even with the bigger battery requirement," a commenter declared.

The video also said prices for traditional gas-powered vehicles have moved up, while the largest price drops have shown up in vehicles built around bigger battery systems, including EVs and plug-in hybrids.

More background

Battery advances are a big part of why this has happened.

The Electric Viking said EV lithium-ion battery packs were projected to cost 37% less in 2025 than they did in 2020. Because the battery can make up about one-quarter of an EV's total cost, cuts there can have a substantial impact on the final price buyers see.

China was cited as another major factor in the decline. In the video, Chinese EV exports were said to have risen from fewer than 100,000 in 2020 to 1.64 million, helping pull down average prices worldwide.

Battery chemistry is shifting, too. Automakers are increasingly adopting lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, batteries, which depend less on expensive materials like nickel and cobalt. That can make EVs less vulnerable to swings in raw-material costs and cheaper to manufacture.

Lower EV prices could mean more than smaller car payments. Over time, EVs can also reduce spending on fuel and maintenance, and when charged with cleaner electricity, they can help curb the tailpipe pollution that contributes to rising temperatures and dirtier air.

What can be done?

Sticker price is only one part of the cost of ownership. Depending on local electricity rates, gas prices, incentives, and maintenance needs, the cheaper option over several years may not be the one that looks least expensive on day one.

Charging access is also a real consideration. For apartment and condo residents, that practical barrier can outweigh global pricing trends.

Used EVs may also help open the door for more buyers.

"Every year good quality second hand EV's provide a more affordable option for people to purchase over hybrid or petrol / diesel options," a user suggested.

Charging infrastructure, battery improvements, and more affordable model options remain key factors.

If those pieces keep falling into place, the global price gap between EVs and hybrids may widen even more.

"EVs were always going to be cheaper, was just a matter of adoption to get the manufacturing numbers up," a user asserted. "Economies of scale."
