Access to Nelson, a small desert destination south of Las Vegas, appears to be limited to residents after a flash flood in southern Nevada seemingly caused serious damage to parts of the road leading there.
A content creator documented the aftermath in a video shared on TikTok, showing the closure and damage along the route.
Here's what to know
The video shows multiple stretches of roadway apparently washed out after flash flooding and a rainstorm. The creator said, "The road to Nelson has been closed," adding that officers were "not letting anybody in except for the residents."
@aalphalina101 We got a bit of rain last night and many things got swept away. The road to Nelson is currently closed while the road crews work through the flooded roads… #flashflood #vegas #floods ♬ original sound - Aalphalina
In the clip, the creator explained there did not appear to be any injuries tied to the flooding.
"We got a bit of rain last night and many things got swept away," the post's caption wrote. "The road to Nelson is currently closed while the road crews work through the flooded roads."
Among the comments, one person wrote, "Wow. I almost went there this morning with my dogs."
"Sad!!! Were you able to see if the 'ghost town' is okay?" another asked, to which the OP replied that it was.
More background
When flooding happens in desert regions, it can be especially destructive because dry, compact ground often cannot absorb intense rainfall quickly enough. As water rushes across the surface, it can turn roads into channels and rip away asphalt, shoulders, and drainage systems within minutes.
When roads are badly damaged, residents can be cut off from essential services, emergency response times can suffer, and local businesses that rely on tourism can lose income. Damage to transportation routes can also impose repair costs on local governments and disrupt workers, delivery vehicles, and visitors.
As weather disasters get more extreme, lives and livelihoods are hindered by the increased risk of sudden evacuations, dangerous driving conditions, stranded motorists, and interruptions to basic community functions.
