Ridglan Farms, a Wisconsin facility, has ended its dog-breeding and testing program after the final 155 beagles were released, marking a major milestone in a rescue effort that has already moved more than 2,100 dogs to safety.

Here's what to know

After the final 155 dogs were turned over to Big Dog Ranch Rescue, Ridglan Farms ended its breeding, sales, research, and testing operations, WISN reported.

Since April 29, Big Dog Ranch Rescue said it has relocated 2,115 beagles from the Wisconsin facility, with the transfer of the last 155 dogs completing the effort. WISN reported that the operation has drawn more than 8,000 adoption applications from people across the country.

The group told the publication that the shutdown of Ridglan Farms' dog operations does not end there.

"We are grateful that these dogs are now safe, but our work will not be finished until dogs trapped in breeding and testing facilities are protected and these cruel practices come to an end," Lauree Simmons, founder of Big Dog Ranch Rescue, said.

More background

In effect, the move means this facility will no longer breed, sell, research on, or test dogs.

Before any of the newly released beagles can be adopted, they will need veterinary exams and treatment, WISN reported, including vaccinations and spaying or neutering.

What's being done?

Big Dog Ranch Rescue is leading the immediate response by taking in the dogs, arranging veterinary care, and preparing them for adoption.

For people who are not in a position to adopt, financial support can still make a difference for rescue and public-interest work. Those looking to build a thoughtful giving habit can look into donating money to causes they are passionate about.
