Florida mall could give rescue dogs a calmer path to adoption with overnight stays

At a mall in Florida, dogs are regularly brought in and out on Fridays and Saturdays for adoption events. Now, the animal rescue behind the events is asking city leaders for permission to house the dogs in the mall overnight to help more animals find permanent homes while avoiding undue stress on the dogs from repeat transports.

Here's what to know

According to WKMG ClickOrlando, Save A Life Pet Rescue, Inc. hosts adoption events at the Oviedo mall on Fridays and Saturdays and is now asking for approval to keep the dogs there overnight.

The outlet reported that the nonprofit has rescued more than 30,000 pets since it was founded in 2006.

Tamara Marshall, president and CEO of Save A Life Pet Rescue, told WKMG that Save A Life Pet Rescue works with shelters in rural, underserved communities, where puppies can be especially difficult to place.

"A lot of those shelters have a lot of puppies that aren't able to find homes," Marshall said. "Just because they have such a high population of puppies in the area and not enough residents in the area."

From there, the rescue moves the dogs into safer environments and foster homes. Marshall said the repeated trips to and from the mall are difficult for the animals and require significant volunteer coordination.

"We're having to coordinate our volunteers and shuffle our pets back and forth and that's very stressful on the animals," Marshall said, as WKMG reported.

More background

According to WKMG, city officials have raised practical concerns tied to the proposal, including noise, odor, and the number of kennels that would be kept on-site.

Marshall said the rescue would keep the dogs in a separate area and is prepared to work with city officials and mall management to reduce disruptions.

"We've got carpeted walls, we've got acoustic ceilings," Marshall said, as reported by WKMG. "We want to make sure we're respectful of the Oviedo community members, especially those tenants here in the Oviedo Mall."

Marshall also told WKMG that overnight housing would match the mall's broader shift toward a mixed-use district focused on living, dining, and entertainment.

What's being done?

According to WKMG, the Oviedo City Council is soon set to vote on the rezoning ordinance, which will determine whether the rescue can proceed with the overnight housing plan.

If the measure passes, the change could reduce stress on the dogs, simplify volunteer coordination, and create a more consistent adoption presence at the mall.

People who want to support efforts like this can follow city meetings, speak up on pet-friendly proposals, or learn more about taking local action in their own area.

If the plan is approved, more families could come across adoptable dogs during everyday errands, and more animals could move from temporary sheltering into permanent homes.
