BYD is opening its latest model, the Sealion 08 — a full-sized SUV designed for families — to preorders in China.
While the car is packed with technology, its most impressive feature may be its charging speeds. BYD says the battery-electric version can jump from 10% battery to 97% in nine minutes.
Here's what to know
Per CarNewsChina.com, BYD is taking reservations for both the plug-in hybrid and fully electric Sealion 08, with a refundable 2,000 Chinese yuan, or $296, deposit required.
The Sealion 08 DM starts at 230,000 yuan, or about $34,105, while the BEV opens at 250,000 yuan, or roughly $37,070.
Five- and six-seat versions are planned, the outlet reported, and the styling includes split front lighting, partly concealed door handles, and one taillight unit spanning the rear. BYD first showed the Sealion 08 at Beijing's April 2026 auto show and is positioning it as a top Ocean-series model for younger buyers.
According to CarNewsChina.com, the plug-in hybrid is listed with roughly 249 miles of electric-only range, while the all-electric Sealion 08 is rated for between 441 and 559 miles, depending on the trim level.
Among the EV's notable planned features, the outlet reported, are rear-wheel steering, dual-chamber air suspension, and BYD's LiDAR-equipped autopilot functions on city streets and highways.
More background
A nine-minute charge from 10% to 97% would put it among the fastest-charging vehicles on the market.
EVs can already help many drivers save money through lower fuel costs and reduced routine maintenance. Electricity is often cheaper than gasoline, and EVs generally avoid oil changes and some of the wear-prone parts found in gas-powered vehicles.
The launch also arrives as BYD continues to expand globally. China EV DataTracker figures cited by CarNewsChina.com show BYD's July 2026 global sales reached 411,072, a 20.5% increase from July 2025, while domestic deliveries dropped 30.9% to 172,449.
What's being done?
Automakers such as BYD are increasingly emphasizing the convenience side of EV ownership alongside the environmental case. Faster charging, longer range, and more advanced driver-assistance systems are central to that push.
Competition is creating more options across price points and powertrains. Plug-in hybrids may appeal to households that want electric driving for many trips without relying fully on charging infrastructure, while fully electric models can offer the biggest savings on fuel and maintenance over time.
If more vehicles arrive with ultra-fast charging and long range, EV adoption could become easier for drivers who have been waiting for a model that fits both their budget and their routine.
BYD's Sealion 08 is one more sign of how quickly the EV market is changing, with bigger batteries, faster charging, longer range, and more premium features moving into the mainstream conversation.
