California utility customers served by Imperial Irrigation District have another chance to earn $250 by shifting when they use electricity, part of a program meant to lower bills and reduce strain on the grid.
For households already trying to keep summer energy bills in check, the offer could bring some welcome relief, especially for those able to move certain chores or cooling habits to lower-demand hours.
What's happening?
Eligible IID customers can get a $250 incentive by signing up for the utility's voluntary time-of-use rate through the expanded Shift and Save program.
As reported by NBC Palm Springs, customers can still claim the incentive until total enrollment hits 6,000.
The rate structure pushes participants to move more consumption into lower-demand times and use less power during peak windows.
Time-of-use plans are designed to reward flexibility. Depending on the utility's pricing windows, that could mean running the dishwasher later in the evening, doing laundry outside peak periods, or cooling a home before the hottest part of the day.
According to IID, the program is meant to combine bill savings with less grid pressure during the hours of highest demand.
Why does it matter?
The most immediate benefit is the direct payment. For qualifying customers, $250 could provide meaningful support at a time when utility costs can climb quickly.
Households that consistently move optional electricity use away from peak hours may be able to lower their monthly bills compared with using large amounts of energy when rates are highest.
Extreme heat can send electricity demand soaring, particularly in communities where air conditioning is not optional but essential.
Grid stress rises when many homes are running air conditioning at once. Using power at different times can ease that burden during the day's hottest stretch and help keep service more reliable.
What can I do?
Customers served by IID can check whether they qualify for Shift and Save and review the requirements for joining the utility's time-of-use rate plan. Only participating customers can receive the $250, and the incentive ends once 6,000 people have enrolled.
Washers, dryers, and dishwashers are often easier to reschedule than more essential energy needs.
Small adjustments, such as charging devices later, changing thermostat timing, or using major kitchen appliances outside peak periods, may help households get more value from the rate structure.
