A vegan Instagrammer is raising alarm bells online after Taco Bell removed an app function that made ordering vegan meals simple.

What happened?

In a reel, Maggie (@maggieeatsvegan) explained that Taco Bell has removed the "fresco-style" option from its app, a feature that allows users to replace dairy ingredients with fresh tomatoes.

"Taco Bell just made it harder to order vegan," she said in the caption.

Taco Bell has long had a reputation as one of the more customizable major fast-food chains for people avoiding meat and dairy. For many customers, Taco Bell's appeal lies in the ability to build meals around beans, potatoes, rice, tortillas, and vegetables while removing cheese, sour cream, and creamy sauces.

A less intuitive menu, app flow, or ordering system can make custom orders more complicated and could leave fewer options for those with dietary restrictions.

Why does it matter?

When plant-based ordering gets harder at a major fast-food chain, the impact extends beyond one frustrated customer.

Many people rely on fast food because it is affordable, widely available, and fits busy schedules. If vegan customization becomes confusing, those customers could lose one of the few easy options they felt they could count on.

Clear plant-based ordering helps normalize lower-impact eating. Meals built around beans, potatoes, and other plant ingredients generally use fewer resources and create less pollution than meat-heavy alternatives.

Unclear menus also create an accessibility issue for customers who avoid animal products for ethical, environmental, cultural, or personal reasons.

For a chain with Taco Bell's reach, even small design decisions can affect a large number of diners.

What are people saying?

People in the comments voiced their frustrations over the brand's decision.

One user tagged Taco Bell in the comments and said, "You are one of the most vegan-friendly fast food restaurants here in the US! Please add the button back and make it easier for consumers to choose a more healthier and kinder option."

"Please do not let us down," another added. "Also, please add preset vegan options that don't require tons of modifications already."
