Health inspectors closed a number of South Florida food businesses after uncovering serious sanitation problems. Their reports described rodents damaging produce, roaches moving over prep areas, and large numbers of flies landing on clean dishes and packaged products.
The shutdowns spanned restaurants, bars, supermarkets, and dessert shops in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties.
Here's what to know
Inspections from July 27 to Aug. 7 led to temporary closure orders for 13 establishments, according to WPLG Local 10. Each of them reopened after cleaning up and passing another inspection.
At Yellow Tail Sub and Grill in Homestead, inspectors recorded 32 violations. The findings included live roaches on a prep table, near cleaned containers, and in paper used to wrap food.
At Pack Supermarket in Miami, inspectors found rodent droppings throughout the store, including 15 or more in a walk-in cooler. The station also reported cabbage bags appeared to have gnaw marks.
Inspectors also shut down Pickles Pub's Sandbar in Key West after seeing more than 100 flies land on boxes and service items. Tacombi in Miami was among the other businesses cited, with droppings and live flies noted there as well.
The inspection reports cited food held at unsafe temperatures, dirty equipment, mold-like buildup, and repeat violations, Local 10 noted.
More background
Rodents and insects are a familiar public health risk in food businesses. Improper food storage, standing water, dirty floors, broken equipment, and gaps around doors can all make it easier for pests to reach food and find shelter.
In many cases, human activity often creates these kinds of animal encounters, whether through waste, neglected maintenance, or inviting environments.
Records showed Pack Supermarket has had three other rodent-related shutdowns since October. Several other businesses were also cited for repeat violations.
What's being done?
The businesses were required to stop operating until inspectors confirmed the hazards had been eliminated in follow-up visits.
Preventing repeat closures requires more than a deep cleaning. Businesses may need to hire pest-control services, retrain staff, repair equipment, and enact stronger food-handling systems.
In one of the starkest findings, inspectors at Yellow Tail Sub and Grill said, "Observed at prep table in kitchen two live roaches crawling … where uncovered hot sauce containers were being prepped."
