Official issues warning as negative temperatures, severe frosts threatens crucial crops

Severe winter conditions in Ukraine could have a devastating impact on farmers and consumers alike. 

What's happening?

Ukraine has experienced one of the coldest starts to February on record, with some areas experiencing temperatures as low as minus-22 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-30 degrees Celsius), according to ProAgro Group.

These colder temperatures have been accompanied by severe frosts and ice on the ground, which are unfavorable growing conditions. As Agronews reported, this could result in the loss of 1 million hectares (10,000 square kilometers) of crops nationwide. 

The President of the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation, Leonid Kozachenko, told Suspline, "This concerns the central and eastern parts of Ukraine." 

Kozachenko added, "In regions where there is no snow cover, low temperatures, and ice on the surface, that's where the losses will occur."

Why is this concerning?

Extreme weather impacts agricultural production, damaging crops and increasing the risk of crop failure. This harms farmers and consumers alike, reducing the amount of crops farmers can sell and making groceries more expensive.
