In Greenwood, Arkansas, a dog stuck below ground was brought back to safety after a police sergeant descended through a manhole into the drainage system.

The incident was caught on camera.

What happened?

40/29 News reported that Sgt. Trent Cowan assisted a dog that fell into the stormwater system and became stuck in a drainage ditch, unable to get out on its own.

Footage the station aired shows Cowan lowering himself through a manhole before retrieving the stranded pup and bringing it back up.

The rescue required Cowan to enter a tight, messy, and potentially dangerous space to reach the animal.

The animal was brought out safely.

Why does it matter?

Drainage systems are designed to move water away from roads and neighborhoods, but for pets and wildlife, they can become hidden hazards. A ditch, culvert, or storm drain may look harmless from above while posing a serious danger below.

Curious animals can end up in risky situations very quickly.

The incident also shows that local first responders may respond to emergencies involving animals as well as people.

What's being done?

In this case, Cowan climbed down through the manhole and removed the dog before the situation could worsen.

Regular maintenance of storm drains, ditches, and runoff systems can help reduce risks for both neighborhoods and animals that may wander into them.

Keeping pets leashed or closely supervised near roads, drainage channels, and unfamiliar outdoor areas can lower the chances of an accident.

If an animal does become trapped, calling local authorities or animal control is often the safest option rather than attempting a risky rescue alone.
