An abandoned sailboat in Washington state is now the subject of a criminal investigation after officials discovered a staggering 60 cats and kittens aboard.

What began as an alarming scene near Tacoma's Owen Beach has turned into a major rescue effort, with Washington officials saying the five dozen animals have now been safely rescued from the sailboat anchored offshore.

Here's what to know

According to CBS News, Tacoma police were called to the abandoned sailboat on Aug. 6 and found dozens of cats and kittens on board in what the department described as unsafe conditions.

Police said several of the cats appeared unwell. In one statement, the department said, "Many of the cats were frightened and malnourished, requiring patience, care, and a tremendous amount of teamwork from our members," per CBS News.

Photos released by the police department showed cats crowded together inside the vessel as responders in protective gear carried crates away from the boat.

Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing. While crews completed their search of the 40-foot vessel for any animals that may have been missed, investigators work to determine how so many cats ended up living in such dangerous conditions.

After nearly a week of work, Tacoma police and Tacoma Animal Control said the last cat had finally been removed. The Tacoma Police Department shared this update on Facebook, writing that, "The final cat is off the boat. Fur real this time. Animal Control is as certain as they can be that all cats have officially disembarked. Final cat count: 60! That's all for meow!"

More background

Officials believe the circumstances may indicate serious neglect. While police have not publicly spelled out the precise allegations, CBS News said CBS affiliate KIRO reported the case may fall under Washington's animal cruelty law as a hoarding situation.

CBS News also reported that Tacoma requires pet licenses and limits households to six dogs and cats combined, making this a clear violation of local rules.
