South Florida households facing steeper summer expenses got some help in Miami-Dade County, where free groceries and take-home energy-saving kits were distributed to ease strain on budgets during the hottest part of the season.
Miami Community News reported that the July 18 giveaway took place at the Culmer Community Resource Center through the CSD No Wrong Door program, with Florida Power & Light Company and the Miami-Dade County Community Services Department providing the supplies.
What happened?
Amid rising electricity bills and higher grocery costs, the event focused on the dual financial pressures that often hit families at once during the summer.
For income-qualified residents, the assistance included Summer Savings Kits stocked with simple efficiency tools such as LED bulbs, door-sealing supplies, and a filter whistle.
The items target common sources of wasted energy. Weatherstripping can help prevent cooled air from escaping, LED bulbs use less electricity than older lighting, and an air filter reminder can help an air conditioner run more efficiently.
"Through partnerships like this, we're helping residents lower their energy costs, put food on the table, and access the resources they need to thrive," commented Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, according to Miami Community News.

Free groceries were also available through the Caring For Miami Mobile Market. The service operates as a one-aisle mobile grocery option stocked with nutritious food and works with community groups, faith organizations, and food pantries to reach areas with fewer grocery options.

Alongside the giveaway, Florida Power & Light Company is steering customers to resources that can help them control summer energy expenses, including bill-management tools, rebates, and other programs available through FPL.com/WaystoSave.
Bianca Soriano, Florida Power & Light Company customer service communications manager, said the effort is meant to connect residents with practical help in their own communities.
"We know that summer heat can bring real financial pressure to families across South Florida, and we're committed to making sure our customers have the tools and support they need to stay comfortable while managing their energy use," Soriano told Miami Community News.
Switching to LEDs, sealing gaps around doors and windows, and keeping air filters in good condition are relatively simple steps that can help keep a home cooler and reduce energy waste over time.
Families seeking additional local support can also find county resources through miamidade.gov.
"As more families face higher utility costs during periods of extreme summer heat, this assistance provides timely relief when it's needed most," Levine Cava added.
