Twenty-six pugs were removed from an unsanitary home in San Antonio in a rescue that underscores how quickly companion animals can end up in dangerous conditions when basic care breaks down.

On the 300 block of Clarence Street, Animal Care Services removed 26 dogs with help from the San Antonio Police Department's SAFFE unit and patrol officers, officials said, according to KENS 5 (via Yahoo News).
These pugs were reportedly experiencing "unsanitary habitation." The San Antonio Police Department later shared an image of some of the rescued pugs.
The animals were taken from the home because the sheer number of dogs there, combined with the state of the property, indicated they were not getting proper care. Now, multiple charges have been filed against the owner.
And as KENS 5 reported, neighbors knew something was amiss due to how many animals were housed there, but they hadn't realized the situation was this dire.
Unsanitary environments can pose serious risks to animals, including untreated health problems, chronic stress, and other conditions associated with prolonged exposure to waste.

Animal Care Services will now handle the dogs' ongoing treatment and care, officials said, per KENS 5. ACS also urged anyone who has spotted an animal or animals in a similar situation to promptly report it to 311. Animals are especially vulnerable to mistreatment due to their inability to advocate for themselves, making these reports critical to their health and safety.
The dogs are not currently available for foster care or adoption just yet, but hopefully they will be soon, per KENS 5.
"Aww, poor pug babes. I'm so glad they are out of that home and onto a better life," one commenter wrote on Facebook.
Another said, "Now…..to get them vetted and new homes found for them."
