Power outages can turn an electric pickup truck into a home power source, but using an EV battery as a backup power source is not always straightforward.
One homeowner learned that firsthand after getting wildly different recommendations and quotes for using a Ford F-150 Lightning as a power source during blackouts.

Looking for practical advice, the owner asked other Lightning drivers in Reddit's r/F150Lightning community what electricians had recommended for backup power setups.
"Live in rural Pennsylvania," they wrote. "We lose power a handful of times every winter, sometimes for a day or two, so this is not a theoretical interest for me."
After adding a garage subpanel, the homeowner said quotes for the transfer-switch side of the job came in "anywhere from 800 to 3,500 dollars for essentially the same outcome."
Replies from other users showed just how much those numbers can swing. One person said a subpanel with a generator interlock plug cost about $400, another estimated roughly $700 in parts for a dual-panel arrangement, and a third reported, "Cost was $2,200, but I had a long pull for wire from my panel to the garage."

The thread also made clear that these installations can get technical quickly. One commenter said you could run into ground-fault problems but detailed a workaround, while another warned that interlocks can conflict with the Lightning's output because "they don't switch neutral; so they do not work with generators with GFCI outputs. Like the Lightning."
