Ikea is expanding its U.K. resale efforts with a marketplace for used furniture that, as House Beautiful reports, will let people buy and sell Ikea pieces directly.
That could make secondhand Ikea shopping more convenient.

Ikea has tested the idea in Norway and Spain and is rolling out a U.K. version of the concept.
The service is built around pre-owned Ikea items and is designed to connect nearby shoppers who want to buy and sell them.
Ikea's Buy Back program works differently.
With that option, customers can bring back eligible unwanted Ikea furniture, receive an Ikea refund card, and then have suitable pieces resold by the company through its Re-shop and Re-use offering.

By setting up a direct resale channel, Ikea is entering a space already occupied by eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Vinted, Depop, and Gumtree. Because the new platform is limited to Ikea products, it may offer a more focused way to find and list those items.
An Ikea spokesperson acknowledged the new initiative.
"At Ikea, we are always looking for new ways to make life at home even better and help our customers discover products they love," they stated.
"With the launch of Ikea secondhand marketplace in the U.K., we're taking a meaningful step toward creating a destination that simplifies access to pre-owned Ikea furniture."

Furniture waste is a major part of the throwaway economy.
Large household items can be expensive to replace, difficult to transport, and hard to dispose of responsibly, so a simpler resale option could help more of them stay in use rather than ending up on the curb.
It also reflects a broader shift in how major retailers approach resale.
Rather than treating secondhand shopping as something that happens only on third-party platforms, more companies are building their own systems to keep products in circulation longer.
That can offer two practical advantages at once: lower-cost furniture and an easier way to recover some value from items that are no longer needed.
For people furnishing a first apartment, a child's room, or a temporary living space, a marketplace focused on used Ikea goods could provide a more affordable option.
Because Ikea has offered its Buy Back program in the U.K. since 2021, the new marketplace adds to an effort the company had underway to support a more circular approach to home goods.

The company is making resale more person-to-person.
Rather than having every qualifying piece go back through Ikea, Ikea Family members will be able to trade with each other locally, which could simplify the process and help more items be reused.
Many used products may still be perfectly functional even if they do not fit a formal buy-back model. A dedicated marketplace can create more opportunities for those items to be reused.
If Ikea's U.K. rollout proves successful, it could further normalize resale as part of everyday furniture shopping rather than a niche alternative.
Ikea said it wants the process to feel routine rather than complicated.
"Our goal is to make passing on beloved Ikea pieces as seamless as possible. We're creating a trusted and vibrant space to make it quick and easy for our Ikea Family members to trade directly with one another," the retailer noted.
"We want the process for buying and selling pre-owned Ikea products to be simple, accessible and rewarding."
