'The new system would not fix the issue': HVAC pros flag a costly comfort mistake

A free warranty replacement can feel like the perfect time to spring for a premium HVAC upgrade. But one homeowner's dilemma shows why the smartest comfort investment is not always the biggest one.

When the main problem is uneven temperatures between floors, a pricier system may not fix what is actually an airflow or zoning issue.

Here's what to know

Although the HVAC system was only a few years old, a homeowner wrote in a thread on Reddit that the builder-installed furnace and air conditioner had already experienced several breakdowns.

Under the proposed warranty work, the company would install a new outdoor unit and evaporator coil, replace the refrigerant, and charge nothing for the job. That plan would restart the air conditioner's 10-year warranty, while leaving six years on the furnace.

With that work already on the schedule, the homeowner wondered whether this was the cheapest time to pay extra for a 97% AFUE, 18 SEER, two-stage system in hopes of getting better comfort.

Other Redditors said the bigger issue sounded less like a need for premium equipment and more like an unresolved distribution problem.

The homeowner said, "The main issue we want to solve is a temperature difference between floors (even though the upstairs isn't used any more) and I was really excited about a continuous blower."

More background

Upgrading your heating and cooling system can be one of the best ways to save money on utility bills and protect yourself against rising energy prices — but only if the upgrade matches the actual problem.

High-efficiency equipment can absolutely improve comfort while cutting wasted energy. Two-stage and variable-speed systems often run longer at lower output, which can help deliver steadier temperatures, quieter operation, and lower electricity use.

That said, several commenters argued that an upstairs area running hotter or colder than the rest of the house is often tied to ductwork or zoning, not simply to the HVAC equipment itself.

One Redditor said, "The new system would not fix the issue you describe of upstairs not working effectively. You would need a zone system or a separate one for upstairs."

Spending thousands on premium equipment without addressing airflow design could leave you with a bigger upfront bill and the same comfort complaint afterward.

What can be done?

If you are weighing a warranty repair against an upgrade, the first step is to ask what is actually causing the discomfort: the equipment itself, the duct layout, thermostat settings, insulation, or the lack of zoning.

A detailed load calculation and airflow check can help you avoid paying for features that will not solve the problem.

If you do decide to upgrade, Palmetto can also help on the financing side. If you're not ready to spend up front, the Comfort Plan includes $0-down options.

You can also drive those utility costs even lower by pairing solar panels with electric appliances, including efficient HVACs and heat pumps. EnergySage makes it easy to find the best solar system and installer for your home and budget.
