A stubborn pink or orange ring at the bottom of a cloth shower liner can make an otherwise clean bathroom feel dirty all over again.

In one Reddit discussion, when a homeowner asked a cleaning forum how to deal with it, commenters landed on a simple solution.

Here's what to know

The conversation started when the original poster in Reddit's r/CleaningTips community wrote: "Cloth shower liner has a pink/orange tinge to it on the bottom. I've washed it but it comes back."

Rather than depending on the washing machine alone, people in the thread said adding a presoak made more of a difference.

"I have a cloth liner, and it does this," the top comment read. "I soak it in OxiClean and wash [it] about once a month. Makes it look like new."

"I do that too. And let it sit out in the sun for a few hours to dry, whiten in the sun," another commenter added.

Bleach came up in a few replies, but the approach that showed up most often paired a soak with time outdoors, making the clearest consensus an oxygen-based cleaner followed by direct sunlight.

More background

Shower liners sit in one of the dampest places in the home, and the bottom edge often collects the most moisture, soap residue, and discoloration.

Before throwing it away or switching straight to plastic, it may be possible to clean up the one already in use with a product that many households already keep on hand and free sunlight in place of a dryer cycle.

Getting more life out of a reusable shower liner can also help reduce how often replacements are needed, while sun-drying uses less energy than machine drying.
