Homeowner rinses AC coils, says cooling got worse, but experts point to another hidden problem

DIY maintenance can save money when it helps an AC run more efficiently, but it can also leave homeowners wondering whether they fixed a problem or accidentally exposed a bigger one.

One homeowner trying to get better performance out of a struggling air conditioner ended up believing they made their situation far worse after they rinsed the outdoor condenser coils with a garden hose.

Here's what to know

The homeowner took the situation to Reddit's r/HVACAdvice community to seek help.

They described a split AC that was still cooling poorly even after a paid service on both the indoor and outdoor units. Because the exterior unit looked dusty, they shut off power and rinsed the condenser coils with low-pressure water. Once they did this, "a lot of dirt came out while I was rinsing it."

What worried the original poster was the change afterward.

"Since doing that, it feels like the AC has lost another 2-3 degrees of cooling," they said.

The homeowner added that they "didn't unscrew or open anything," "didn't wash the fan," and "only washed the condenser coils using low water pressure."

A basic rinse of accessible outdoor coils is often considered a low-cost maintenance step that can improve airflow, reduce strain on the system, potentially lower power use, and help a unit cool more effectively.

However, when cooling was already weak before the rinse, the issue may be something the hose neither caused nor could fix, such as a dirty indoor component, restricted airflow, or low refrigerant.

The top comment explained that "rinsing the coil itself shouldn't hurt anything as long as no water got into the electrical box or the fan motor bearings." 

"So you probably didn't cause damage, just maybe didn't fix the real problem," it continued. "... Get a tech out with gauges to actually check the charge and superheat/subcooling, that'll tell you way more than guessing."

Not everyone was especially supportive of this idea, with another commenter responding, "This may involve pulling the charge out to weight it compared to factory charge and lineset length. It won't be a cheap or short visit."

Others suggested that the OP may have made the situation worse. 

One wrote, "If your system is low on refrigerant, it's possible that a dirty coil was causing it to run at higher pressure and temps. Once cleaned, those pressure and temps went down causing the system to freeze. So yes, your cooling could technically get worse after cleaning it if it has underlying issues, but running it dirty [also] causes excessive wear on the compressor."

More background

The outdoor condenser is only one part of an AC system. If the indoor coil, filter, blower, or drain side is dirty, cooling can still suffer even if the outdoor unit looks cleaner. A system can appear improved from the outside while still failing to deliver colder air indoors.

Low refrigerant is another common concern because it can reduce cooling performance without any obvious visible damage. If a unit was not cooling properly even after professional service, that raises the possibility that the underlying problem was never fully addressed.

A simple, successful coil cleaning can be a free or nearly free way to support efficiency and avoid another service call, while a missed refrigerant issue can push up utility bills as the system runs longer to reach the same temperature.

Gentle coil rinsing does not usually explain a major drop in performance on its own, especially if the power was turned off and the fins were not bent. More often, it suggests an existing issue that needs a proper diagnosis.
