The largest wind farm in America is celebrating a major achievement on its journey to fulfill its vast promise for clean energy production.

As Electrek detailed, Dominion Energy's Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project announced in March that it produced and sent power to the grid for the first time. The company's CEO, Robert Blue, shared the milestone on LinkedIn, saying it arrived "right on schedule."

"This achievement marks another important step forward, adding much‑needed electricity to help meet the fastest‑growing power demand in the country," Blue wrote. "As additional turbines are installed, CVOW will continue delivering more power on the path to full completion early next year."

At the time of the announcement, 176 turbines had been installed, with 30% of the project yet to be completed. Two Siemens Gamesa turbines, each generating 14 megawatts, supplied the initial power to the grid, with the other structures set to be turned on gradually.

The moment is an important one for the much-hyped 2.6-gigawatt project. The road to this point had been a bit bumpy, with the Trump administration targeting wind projects for cancellation. The project was delayed temporarily before a judge sided with Dominion.

Between tariffs and the impact of the momentary stop-work order, the cost of the project has risen from $9.8 billion to $11.5 billion.

Considering the project harnesses the potential to power over 660,000 homes, it will give the grid a major boost when completed.

With data centers and artificial intelligence heightening electricity demand in the state, Blue noted CVOW is "a critical part of Virginia's all‑of‑the‑above energy strategy."

It will also be of great benefit to consumers, who will have energy from a source that doesn't pollute the air — unlike power plants that rely on oil, coal, or gas — and it will help them lower their bills. The project is expected to generate $3 billion in savings for customers in its first 10 years. It can also create new jobs while bolstering grid stability.

Commenters on Electrek cheered the news.
