Homeowner sees 69% battery health on new Tesla Powerwall in under a month, but users blame app

"[Comes] up with a lot of weird errors, so I stuck with Netzero."

A homeowner got an alarming surprise when a third-party app showed their Tesla Powerwall 3 system at just 69% health after less than a month.

Here's what to know

Writing on Reddit alongside a screenshot of the app, the homeowner said, "Using the gridmind app, I see the PW3 (+ expansion) battery health is at 69%. The battery was installed less than a month ago."

"I keep the reserve at 10%, and am in a self-powered mode," they further explained. "How real are these measurements, do you really think the power wall 3 + expansion unit is reliable, and any suggestions on what I should do?"

Instead of assuming the new battery had already degraded, several commenters cast doubt on the app's estimate.

A user who said they had also tested the app wrote, "I used gridmind app for a month as a trial to see if it's any good. Come up with a lot of weird errors, so I stuck with Netzero."

Another reply said the app seemed to be calculating based on a 13.5-kilowatt-hour capacity — the rated capacity of a single Powerwall 3 — which may not fully reflect a system with an expansion pack.

Adding battery storage is one of the best ways to protect your home during outages, save on energy costs, and go off-grid when necessary. If you're weighing your options, EnergySage can help you find information on home battery storage options. EnergySage has teamed up with the electrification brand Qmerit to guarantee you get the best price on home battery storage solutions.

Another option is Pila, which offers plug-and-play batteries for a fraction of the cost of a whole-home backup system.

Solar panels can save you more than $50k over their 25-year lifespan, and EnergySage can help you save as much as $10k on installation. Which begs the question — isn't that worth an email or two?

More background

Third-party battery monitoring tools can sometimes show information that the manufacturer's own app does not.

After another user asked what those extra apps actually offer, one commenter replied: "Battery health information, for one."

That point fed into the thread's central debate — whether the app was interpreting the homeowner's setup properly, given that the system reportedly included both a Powerwall 3 and an expansion unit.

If software misreads the total installed capacity, it can generate a health score that looks disastrous even when the equipment is functioning normally.

What can be done?

If a brand-new battery suddenly appears heavily degraded, the first step is to verify the number before assuming the system is failing.

Homeowners can check the Tesla app and compare the results with those from another monitoring platform.

Battery storage can reduce reliance on gas generators, preserve refrigerated food and medications during outages, and help homeowners get more value from their electricity use over time.

For people who are not ready for a full-home system, smaller backup products can still provide a meaningful safety net for lights, internet service, and device charging. Larger systems, meanwhile, may make sense for homes seeking longer resilience and greater savings from time-shifting power.
