When an HVAC company says a six-year-old AC has reached the end of the road, it makes sense to pause — especially when the issue may not justify replacing the whole system.
That uncertainty is what led one California homeowner to Reddit in search of reassurance or a reality check.
Here's what to know
A Bay Area homeowner laid out the situation in a Reddit post on the r/hvacadvice subreddit. They said the company returned for a follow-up after using dye during the first visit to track down the leak.
"I guess some sort of coil was leaking refrigerant and we were advised it's not fixable and we'd have to replace the entire AC unit," the homeowner said.

One person urged the homeowner to look into warranty coverage first.
"If it's only 6 years old, you should check for the manufacturers parts warranty. Some are 5 some are 10, you might still be covered," they said.
"Call someone else," another reply read. "Small shop. Older vans. Don't trust any HVAC business that advertises $89 'tuneups' or sends a ton of junk mail. It's all private equity. Fix it and forget about it."
If you're trying to sort through those options for buying a new system, Palmetto's Comfort Plan network can help you find efficient heating and cooling solutions for your home and connect you with vetted installers, which can make it easier to compare repair and replacement paths while looking for ways to slash your energy bills.
More background
Not everyone in the thread agreed that the unit had no chance of being fixed. One user said replacement coils are available and added that some leaks may be fixable, depending on where the damage is located.
That does not mean every leaking or aging unit should automatically be repaired. If the fixes become frequent, the system is inefficient, or the cost no longer makes sense, replacement can be the better option. Still, if a new system is truly needed, upgrading your heating and cooling equipment can be one of the most effective ways to lower utility bills and protect against rising energy costs.
That is especially true with newer high-efficiency equipment or a heat pump, both of which can reduce wasted energy while keeping a home comfortable.
What can be done?
It's important to ask for the exact part that failed, request the findings in writing, and check whether the manufacturer's warranty is still active. Then get a second opinion from another licensed HVAC company before agreeing to a full-system replacement.
You can also ask for side-by-side quotes that compare repair, coil replacement, and a new efficient HVAC or heat pump. For homeowners exploring upgrades, Palmetto Comfort Plans include options.
If you do upgrade, pairing solar panels with electric appliances, such as efficient HVAC systems, can drive your utility costs even lower. EnergySage makes it easy to find the best solar array and installer for your home and budget.
