For anyone considering ditching the grid for a solar-and-battery setup, the off-grid expert and YouTuber Mike Solar Garage has some essential tips. In a recent video, he warns that trying to build a 48-volt system out of 12V or 24V battery strings can quickly turn a pricey project into a reliability problem, raising the odds of shutdowns, extra maintenance, and even ruined batteries.
Mike Solar Garage says wiring 12-volt or 24-volt batteries in series for use in a 48-volt system can lead to increased maintenance needs, unexpected cutoffs, and, in some cases, dead batteries.
Here's what to know
In a recent YouTube video, off-grid solar creator Mike Solar Garage said he prefers a native 48-volt lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery bank when the inverter itself is built for 48 volts.
He said the advantage is a cleaner design: fewer parts, simpler wiring, and a lower chance that separate batteries will drift out of sync in state of charge.
Because every battery pack has its own battery management system, or BMS, series-connecting 24V or 12V packs to behave like one 48V bank can allow one pack to reach a low-voltage cutoff before the others do.
He said that warning comes from personal experience: after bricking two 24-volt batteries in a 48-volt setup, his advice was blunt — "Do not do this."
Using 12V strings adds still more complication, he said. Active balancers may help keep packs aligned, but they also mean more wires and more lugs.

A setup that looks cheaper at the outset can become harder to troubleshoot, harder to expand, and more vulnerable during a blackout or a long stretch of bad weather.
He also pointed to a separate safety concern with very large battery packs above roughly 314 amp-hours. In those batteries, cells may be paralleled inside a single case, which can make a failing cell harder to spot because stronger cells can hide the issue.
Instead, he said native 48V batteries connected in parallel via bus bars can provide substantial storage without many of the problems associated with series-built 48V banks.
Using his example, four 48V batteries rated at 314 amp-hours would total about 60 kilowatt-hours of storage — enough, he said, to power a typical U.S. home for around two days when sunlight is limited.
What can be done?
In practical terms, his recommendation was to match the system at its native voltage: a 48V inverter paired with 48V batteries.
He said that setup can make installation more straightforward, reduce balancing problems, and leave a cleaner path for expansion later.
For bigger systems, he also suggested putting multiple 48V batteries in parallel through bus bars and using equal cable lengths so power-sharing stays more even.
Matching hardware correctly, choosing properly rated components, and getting help from a qualified installer when needed can save time and money later.
