One British homeowner is attracting jealousy online after they purchased a nearly $12,000 heat pump HVAC for just $1,400.

In a YouTube Short posted on Aug. 17, one Greater Manchester installer, Lloyd's Gas & Renewables, said that the homeowner was able to slash their cost down by nearly 90% thanks to a boiler upgrade scheme grant.

Here's what to know

The installer featured the finished heat pump job and said the homeowner's final bill came to roughly $1,430 (£1,050) after a $10,218 (£7,500) grant was applied. This represents an 87.7% reduction in the price.

The massive discount makes the clip a useful example of an after-grant total instead of just a headline incentive figure. For households deciding between a heat pump and a replacement gas boiler, the upfront bill is often the primary consideration.

The installer also explained that "it was a total of 1,050 pounds, which is absolutely ridiculous when you look at what you're getting for that cost. This customer had a five-kilowatt Vaillant Arotherm plus heat pump. They've got pre-insulated underground pipe. They've got the trunking up to where it goes through to the boiler."

He added, "You can't even get a good boiler for that price nowadays."

More background

Of course, the total cost should not be treated as a standard price. That amount was tied to this particular property, installation design, and the massive grant that they received.

Heat pump costs can vary widely depending on the size of the home, insulation levels, existing radiators or pipework, and how easily installers can route equipment to the old boiler location.

Yet, it is important to note that heat pumps are highly efficient because they move heat rather than generate it by burning gas, which can help reduce a household's reliance on volatile fuel prices while also cutting pollution from home heating.

Not every installation will cost so little, but grant-backed electrification can dramatically lower the price under the right circumstances.
