A Florida investigation into a crash that killed three people is raising questions about how much weight authorities gave to a single automated camera alert over other evidence.
In this case, a 23-year-old woman ended up in jail on felony charges, only for prosecutors to drop the case against her and for investigators to arrest another person.

The hit-and-run happened on Oct. 4, 2025, near DeBary, Florida, and left three people dead: Joaquin Deno, Flagler County deputy administrator Jorge Salinas, and Salinas' wife, Nancy.
On April 17, the Florida Highway Patrol arrested 23-year-old Lindsey Brooke Isaacs on eight felony charges, including three counts of vehicular homicide, according to Gadget Review.
Reports say the investigation against her was driven by a Flock Safety automated license plate reader alert that placed Isaacs' black Dodge Durango about three miles from the crash scene.
Even so, other reported evidence suggested investigators should have been looking elsewhere.
A 911 caller reportedly said the vehicle was a maroon Dodge Durango and gave a partial plate number that did not match Isaacs'. Forensic findings also reportedly showed maroon paint on a vehicle involved in the crash, while Isaacs' federal lawsuit says her black Durango had no damage tied to it.
Her lawyer additionally maintained that a time-and-distance analysis showed her SUV could not have reached the crash site when the collision happened.
Isaacs spent 13 days in jail before prosecutors said the evidence was insufficient to keep her detained ahead of trial. Her charges were dropped on May 22.
On May 22, investigators acted on the maroon Durango lead and arrested 47-year-old Alisa Montalvo. Authorities say her maroon Durango had damage consistent with the crash scene. Montalvo faces nine charges, including three counts of vehicular homicide, and has not been convicted.

More broadly, the case underscores a common criticism of automated plate readers: an alert generated by the system can be treated as the answer, rather than as one lead that still needs to be tested against everything else.
These camera networks are part of a larger digital infrastructure that overlaps with AI-style data processing, pattern matching, and automation. While such tools can help optimize traffic systems and even support cleaner energy planning, they also rely on electricity-intensive computing and data storage.
That can strain the grid, consume water at data centers, raise security and misuse concerns, and contribute to higher costs if expansion outpaces safeguards.
When a plate is logged in the wrong place at the wrong time, a mistake can snowball fast.
What's being done?
Isaacs has filed a federal lawsuit against the Florida Highway Patrol and the troopers involved; she alleges they falsely said her vehicle showed crash-consistent damage.
The larger policy question, however, remains unsettled.
Courts have not clearly determined whether an ALPR hit by itself can amount to probable cause for arrest. That leaves room for lawmakers, police agencies, and courts to create stricter guardrails, such as requiring corroborating physical evidence, documenting contradictory leads, and training investigators not to treat automated alerts as proof.
