A South Texas renter said their "new to me" apartment became a miserable wake-up call when the air conditioner failed to keep up overnight and froze into what the tenant described as a "wall of slushy ice."

Anyone dealing with summer heat knows how quickly a struggling AC can go from annoying to urgent.

Here's what to know

In a post on Reddit's r/hvacadvice, the tenant wrote that after a day near 97 degrees, they set the thermostat to 70 for the night but still woke up to an apartment at 77 degrees by morning.

"I've never had a wall unit like this before but does this look normal?" the user wrote. "There's like a wall of slushy ice in there."

Commenters said the setup did not appear normal.

"Protip while you're renting … and your thermostat goes 3-4 degrees beyond your set point, and your filter is clean and WAS clean before the issue, put in a maintenance request. You pay for that maintenance every month (built into your rent), use it," a commenter advised.

In replies, the renter noted that the filter was "crisp and brand new."

They also said that after turning off the AC and running the fan for several hours, the ice was gone, though the system still stayed warmer than the thermostat setting.

More background

A frozen AC coil usually points to a problem with airflow, maintenance, or the system itself.

In practical terms, that can mean a unit keeps running while a home stays too warm, pushing up the electric bill without providing much relief.

In hot climates, cooling is not just about comfort

Poor sleep, indoor overheating, and surprise utility costs can add up quickly when an aging or dirty system stops working properly.

Renters often have fewer options than homeowners when it comes to major energy-saving upgrades.

Landlords across the country have also been known to prevent renters from adopting smaller money-saving lifestyle changes, including gardening and hanging clotheslines to dry their laundry.

What can be done?

When an apartment AC starts icing over, or the indoor temperature remains several degrees above the thermostat setting, a practical next step is to stop pushing the system, record the symptoms, and submit a written maintenance request.

Photos of ice buildup, thermostat readings, and filter condition can help show that the issue goes beyond normal wear.

If you're a homeowner, replacing an inefficient system can be a major money saver. Palmetto's Comfort Plan offers options to lower your heating and cooling costs by up to 50% and includes 12 years of free maintenance.

You can also drive utility costs even lower by pairing solar panels with electric appliances, such as efficient HVAC systems. EnergySage makes it easy to find the best solar system and installer for your home and budget.

The renter said the immediate problem improved after the unit was thawed.

"The ice wall is GONE! AC still running about 4-5° hotter than what it's set to but i'm okay with that. I have put in a maintenance request and will let them handle from here," they explained in a comment.
