Tesla's $35 Powerwall lease raises red flags for some Texas homeowners

How much value a battery provides depends a lot on where you live and how your utility bills you.

Tesla's new Powerwall lease is drawing interest from homeowners who want backup power without paying the full upfront cost of a battery system.

But a discussion on the r/Powerwall subreddit suggests many shoppers are getting hung up on a more complicated question of whether a low monthly price actually translates into meaningful savings, especially in Texas.

Here's what to know

The conversation on Reddit grew out of a post titled "Lease option" about Tesla's new offer that featured a screenshot of an X post by Tesla enthusiast Sawyer Merritt (@SawyerMerritt).

The original poster got the conversation going: "What's everyone's thoughts on this new Tesla powerwall lease? Worth it or no?"

For some commenters, the biggest issue was the basic math.

"Is it possible to save more than 35 bucks a month with just powerwalls in Texas?" one person asked.

Another suggested probably not, writing that "with this promotion you have to use Tesla Electric so it's doubtful."

A poster from San Diego said they did a similar program, and touted its benefits for efficiency, consistent bills, and avoiding the grid. However, they conceded it wasn't really about the bottom line.

More background

Adding battery storage is one of the most effective ways to protect your home during outages, save money on energy, and even reduce your reliance on the grid.

A battery can store power from solar panels or cheaper overnight electricity, then discharge it when rates rise, demand charges kick in, or the grid goes down.

How much value that provides depends a lot on where you live and how your utility bills you. In Arizona, one commenter said their Powerwalls were "saving me about $150 a month just on the demand charge," adding that "I'd definitely do Powerwalls again, no doubt."

Much of the pushback in the thread was about the lease model itself, not just the battery. One commenter said solar and battery leases "just add steps" when it comes time to sell a house

Another warned that "as low as $35/month seems like suspicious wording."

What can be done?

The monthly price is only one piece of the equation. Transfer rules, escalation clauses, buyout terms, utility requirements, and the number of batteries included can all determine whether a deal actually works in your favor.

Battery storage can be a powerful tool, but the best choice depends on your utility plan, your home, and how long you expect to stay there.

For people who want backup power without committing to a whole-home system, Pila is another company offering excellent battery backup options. Its plug-and-play batteries are priced at a fraction of the cost of a whole-home backup system.
