An Aug. 27 event in Brockton will give Massachusetts National Grid customers a place to get help with utility bills and learn ways to stay cool without sending electricity costs even higher.
What's happening?
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 27, National Grid will host a customer assistance event at Brockton's Cape Verdean Association, 575 N. Montello St., according to The Enterprise. The session is intended to help customers sort through billing questions, review support options and find ways to cut summer energy use.
People who attend can ask about payment assistance, budget billing, the company's Tiered Discount Rate Program and its Arrears Management Program. Energy experts will also offer advice on reducing electricity use during the summer, when air conditioners and fans can drive household energy demand higher.
National Grid is holding similar events around Massachusetts as part of its Summer Cooling campaign.
Why does it matter?
For many households, summer brings a difficult mix of hotter temperatures and rising electric bills. Cooling costs can add up quickly, especially for families already dealing with tight budgets or past-due balances.
Reducing electricity use can lower bills, ease strain on the grid during periods of peak demand, and limit the pollution associated with power generation.

What's being done?
Customers will be able to speak directly with company representatives at the event about payment plans and discount programs that may fit their needs.
Budget billing is intended to make monthly costs more predictable, while the Tiered Discount Rate Program and Arrears Management Program may offer relief to eligible households facing affordability challenges or overdue balances.
Attendees can also get help understanding their utility bills and spotting areas where power use may be running higher than expected.
