A couple's drive into the country to pick up a frail stray kitten became a just-in-time rescue, as they brought the sick little cat to safety just days before a subzero snowstorm that could have killed her.

What happened?

The story was shared on Reddit's r/BeforeNAfterAdoption community, where the couple posted photos from the day they saved the kitten along with more recent photos, and the difference is striking. The cat is called Purranga Leela. In the updated photos, she looks calm, healthy, and comfortable in her surroundings, with little resemblance to the fragile stray they first found.

The couple took in the sick young cat on Super Bowl Sunday in 2024, when she was surviving outside in a rural area and looked seriously unwell. Luckily, they got her just before a severe cold snap arrived a few days later.

Why does it matter?

Stray cats and other animals face steep odds outdoors when they are already sick or malnourished. Worsening extreme weather linked to human activity only increases those dangers, threatening survival.

Intervening during high-risk moments can be critical. When dangerous weather is approaching, delaying action can carry serious consequences for animals living outside.

In Leela's case, food, warmth, veterinary care, and time turned a frightened animal into a confident companion. It's a great example for anyone else who might come along a stray and not know what to do. Rescue can prevent immediate harm and give an animal the chance at a long life.

What can I do?

If you spot a stray cat or kitten during severe weather, local animal shelters, rescue groups, and trap-neuter-return organizations are often the best first call. They may be able to help with transport, foster placement, or medical support.

If it's safe to do so, providing temporary warmth, water, and a sheltered space can help while you wait for guidance. If you bring a stray indoors, it is wise to keep the animal separated from resident pets until a veterinarian can check for illness, parasites, and a microchip.

Not everyone can take in a stray, but helping with transportation, fostering during a storm, donating supplies, or alerting a local rescue can still make a difference for a vulnerable animal.

For Leela, it made all the difference. Two years after evading a subzero snowstorm, the once-scared stray was affectionately described as the "supermodel queen of the house."
