Powerwall 3 upgrade leaves owner without the Home Assistant link to backup battery data

Hardware improvements do not always translate into a seamless software experience.

A Powerwall owner who upgraded from a Powerwall 2 setup to a Powerwall 3 with an expansion unit ran into an unexpected snag: While the battery system kept working, the local network connection they relied on for Home Assistant did not.

What happened?

Posting on Reddit, the user said their old method for reconnecting Home Assistant stopped working once they moved to a PW3 system with expansion.

They said the main issue was that they could no longer "locate the Backup Gateway 2's IP address."

If you are weighing your own backup options, it may be worth exploring EnergySage's free tools to compare home battery storage choices and get competitive installation estimates.

Another option is Pila, which offers battery backup products.

Why does it matter?

For many homeowners, adding battery storage is one of the best ways to protect a home during outages, save money on energy, and move closer to going off-grid.

A battery can keep critical appliances running when the grid goes down, while also helping households store cheaper or self-generated electricity for later use.

If you cannot see how your system is charging, discharging, or switching during outages, it becomes harder to optimize when to use stored power and when to pull from the grid.

Save $10,000 on solar panels without even sharing your phone number

Want to go solar but not sure who to trust? EnergySage has your back with free and transparent quotes from fully vetted providers in your area.

To get started, just answer a few questions about your home — no phone number required. Within a day or two, EnergySage will email you the best options for your needs, and their expert advisers can help you compare quotes and pick a winner.

Solar panels can save you more than $50k over their 25-year lifespan, and EnergySage can help you save as much as $10k on installation. Which begs the question — isn't that worth an email or two?

On time-of-use utility plans, that can mean missing chances to avoid expensive peak-rate electricity, reducing potential monthly savings.

Hardware improvements do not always translate into a seamless software experience.

A newer battery setup may expose different devices or network paths than an older one, especially when a gateway and master unit no longer appear exactly as they did before.

What can I do?

If you run into a similar issue after a battery upgrade, start with the basics: Check your router's connected-device list, DHCP leases, and reserved IP settings to see whether the gateway is showing up under a different name.

Confirm whether the PW3 master has taken over functions that were previously tied to the gateway in your older setup.

Home Assistant users can also review the current integration documentation and community discussions for any changes related to Powerwall 3 local API access.

Battery storage can help families ride through blackouts, reduce reliance on volatile grid power, and squeeze more value from rooftop solar or off-peak electricity.

Redditors took to the comments to offer the OP some advice.

One user said, "The password is on a label inside the pw3, however you have to be connected to the Powerwall's WiFi for it to work."

Another commented, "In a Powerwall 3 system the gateway 2 becomes dumb and it just becomes the site meter and anti-islanding controller."
