The Oma's Pride pet food cstates ompany has recalled a frozen raw dog food item distributed in Kentucky and 10 other after U.S. Food and Drug Administration testing found salmonella.

At least three illnesses have been tied to the issue.

Here's what to know

The voluntary recall involves the company's Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe, a 6-pound product that was delivered frozen to stores, wholesalers, and people who purchased it online. This recall of lot BB012729 occurred after a consumer complaint led the FDA to test the food and detect salmonella.

Distribution of the affected lot reached retail and wholesale customers in eleven states, including the following: Kentucky, Arizona, California, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. There were also frozen direct-to-consumer online orders.

People and pets can both become ill from salmonella. The FDA explained that human exposure can happen by handling contaminated pet food or by touching surfaces it has contacted, particularly if people don't wash their hands thoroughly afterward.

The company said its effort to identify how the contamination started is ongoing.

More background

Healthy people with salmonella may develop symptoms like nausea and vomiting. The illness can also lead to more serious complications, especially for vulnerable groups like young children.

Pets can also become sick after eating contaminated food. They may show lethargy, vomiting, fever, diarrhea that may be bloody, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain, per the FDA recall. Even animals that appear healthy can carry salmonella and spread it to other pets or people.

Anyone who bought the affected lot should stop using it right away and dispose of it safely. Consumers are also advised to avoid handling the food unnecessarily and to clean any bowls and other surfaces that may have come into contact with it.

For refunds, consumers can reach Oma's Pride at 1-800-678-OMAS on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, or by emailing the company at Hello@OmasPride.com.

Anyone who develops symptoms after handling the recalled product should contact a healthcare provider. Pets that are showing symptoms should see a veterinarian as soon as possible.
