For Houston families feeling the squeeze of back-to-school shopping and high grocery bills, the nonprofit Hugs in a Blanket Foundation offered relief through a free pop-up grocery and family food park event with staples, hot meals, and activities for kids.

Here's what to know

On Sunday, Everybody Eatz: Ivan's Pop-Up Grocery Store & Food Park took place at Houston's Exotic Pop on Almeda Road, according to KPRC 2.

In an air-conditioned space, families chose free items such as produce, meat, snacks, and other dry goods. Organizers said the event was meant to help households cope with rising food costs and reduced food-assistance options.

The offerings extended beyond groceries, with local vendors serving hibachi food, build-your-own tacos, and cold drinks alongside a live DJ. There were also free haircuts, raffles, and giveaways.

All items and services were free, though availability was limited, with the event operating on a first-come, first-served basis.

More background

The foundation positioned the event as a grocery-style setting where families could choose from a variety of foods and spend time together.

"Rather than a typical back-to-school giveaway, we're creating a real pop-up grocery experience — plus hot, prepared options — so families can stock up and enjoy time together," Ivan Lambert, the nonprofit's founder, said, per KPRC 2.

As the cost of groceries, gas, and other staples remains high, such events are more than a convenient source of food and goods. These community initiatives are becoming increasingly necessary for families trying to keep up with the cost of living.

On-site kid-friendly entertainment included a foam party, bounce house, mechanical bull contest, and mobile basketball competition.
