A salmonella-related food recall is affecting a range of ready-to-eat items at the Hannaford supermarket chain, according to WMTW.

What happened?

A recall from jalapeno supplier Coast Citrus Distributors has led Hannaford Supermarkets to pull six deli and produce products over possible salmonella contamination, WMTW reported.

Hannaford announced the recall on August 8, 2026.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the affected items are as follows: Beans Rice and Cheese Burrito (best by 8/7/26 through 8/11/26), Classic Beef Burrito (best by 8/7/26 through 8/12/26), Chicken Verde Burrito (best by 8/7/26 through 8/10/26), Chipotle Chicken Tortilla Wrap (best by 8/7/26 through 8/10/26), Diced Jalapenos 4/3.75 oz (best by 8/9/26 or 8/12/26), and Pico de Gallo Salsa 4/7 oz (best by 8/9/26 through 8/12/26).

The recall also mentions several other major stores like Whole Foods, Target, Stop & Shop, and Trader Joe's.

Why is this concerning?

At least 345 people have reported illnesses associated with the salmonella strain from the recall, leading to 36 hospitalizations, and thankfully, zero deaths.

Salmonella can cause very serious illness, especially in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.

A problem with one supplier can affect people in many places. As ingredients move through complex supply chains, shoppers often have no easy way of knowing where a risk began.

While food recalls can seem like isolated mishaps, they can illuminate weaknesses across industrial food production. And even if they don't affect similar food producers, they can be reminders that it's always important to value and improve food safety. Practicing good food safety can also lead to less food waste.

What can I do?

In the company's notice, customers were told to "check their storage and freezer areas for these products and not eat the products," according to WMTW. Hannaford also said the affected items "may be returned to a local Hannaford store for a full refund."

Anyone who is unsure whether an item is covered can check with a nearby store or call Hannaford Customer Care at 1-800-213-9040.
