A wildfire filmed in Herrington, England, reveals how devastating fires can be for communities.

Here's what to know

In a TikTok post, a short clip shows a wildfire inundating a farm field, with drivers pulled over on the side of the road watching it spread.

🔥 Wildfire up at Herrington 😭 Those emergency alerts on our phones on Friday suddenly feel a lot more real when you can see something like this coming towards your home. Please be extra careful while you're out and about in this weather. Cigarettes being thrown on the ground, disposable BBQs or anything else that could potentially start a fire can have devastating consequences. This has already grown absolutely massive and it's going to be some job getting it contained now. 😭 Stay safe everyone ❤️

In the comments, people shared concerns for the families affected by the fire and offered theories about how it started.

"That's someone's livelihood, months of hard graft gone," one user wrote.

"Farmers are struggling enough as it is," another wrote.

"There's currently a trend going around for kids to set as many fires as they can on farmland. It's having a huge impact," one person theorized.

More background

The video suggests the fire is burning near residential areas.

The economic fallout can stretch far beyond the fire line. One commenter put it bluntly: "Gutted for the farms and farmers that have to deal with catastrophes such as this. So much going on in the agricultural sector that is devastating it." Fires can damage crops, grazing land, fences, equipment, and outbuildings, and disrupt work and transportation.

Smoke exposure can harm public health, especially for children, older adults, and people with breathing issues. At the same time, fires can strain emergency services, threaten housing, and destabilize local economies that depend on agriculture, small businesses, and tourism.

Even when homes are spared, the fear, cleanup, disruption, and economic devastation can linger long after the flames are out.

People living near fire-prone spaces can also prepare for emergencies before a warning arrives. Keeping phones charged, monitoring official alerts, knowing evacuation routes, and making a simple household plan can save precious time if conditions worsen.

If smoke is heavy in the area, staying indoors with the windows closed can help reduce exposure. People should also avoid unnecessary travel near an active fire and report signs of new fires as quickly as possible so responders can act before a blaze grows.
